It
was a wonderful late-spring Texas day — the skies were overcast — with
temperatures in the mid-70s.
The crowds enjoyed a fun-filled
day — with just a brief 10-minute sprinkle of moisture. Events
went on non-stop until midnight.

The son of a Methodist preacher, lawyer, schoolteacher and circuit rider,
Texas’ outlaw John Wesley Hardin was named after the founder of the
Methodist sect—a saint he was not.
The
“Handbook of Texas” states that “no more dangerous gunman ever operated in
Texas.” The “Terror of Texas”, John Wesley Hardin was rumored to have
killed his first man at the age of 14, and depending on whose doing the
telling, 30 plus men followed. Legend has it that he was so mean that he
once shot a man for snoring.
On May 26, 1874, the outlaw made his mark on Comanche County. While
celebrating his 21st birthday at Jack Wright’s Saloon, John Wesley Hardin
shot Brown County Sheriff, Charles Webb.
Storytellers who knew the outlaw spin a different tale of a gentleman who
“never killed anyone who didn’t need killing.” According to some, he was a
man more sinned against than sinning. It has been posed that many of the
notches on Hardin’s belt came in self-defense rather than rage.
Immortalized in print and in song, the tales of John Wesley Hardin pose
the question, “Was the preacher’s son a cold-blooded killer, or in the
harshness of the late 1800’s, were the black and white lines of morality
blurred by the basic instinct of survival?”
