It was a wonderful late-spring Texas day — the skies were overcast — with temperatures in the mid-70s.

The crowds enjoyed a fun-filled day —  with just a brief 10-minute sprinkle of moisture.  Events went on non-stop until midnight.

Comanche Main Street invite you to the 2007 John Wesley Hardin Days Festival and CHS All-Class Reunion.

Activities scheduled during the day include the early morning Outlaw 5k & 10k "Run for the Money", formal dedication of the recently restored "Old Cora cabin" and new Visitors Information Kiosk, reenactments of the famous John Wesley Hardin gunfight with Sheriff Charlie Webb, Fire Fighters Water Polo, heritage demonstrations, craft and food booths, and children's activity area.

The Brazos Banditos are expected to ride into town for three rip-snorting appearances. …"Lock up your women and livestock."

It will be an action packed and fun filled day with continuous entertainment—either on the Main Stage, or around the Courthouse Square.  Restaurants, shops, stores and galleries will be open with special promotions.

Joaquin Jackson, Texas Ranger extraordinaire, is scheduled to be present and give readings from his book, "One Ranger, A Memoir".  "This project was made possible in part with a grant from Humanities Texas, the state partner of the National Endowment for the Humanities."

A repeat of last year's popular bus tour of historic Comanche sites is scheduled, and "In God We Still Trust" will be staged.

The Jack Black Band will be on stage at 4 P.M. — "a blend of Ragweed, Cash, and Wills"

The day's festivities will conclude with the ever popular Street Dance featuring the legendary Texas musician, Tommy Alverson.

The son of a Methodist preacher, lawyer, schoolteacher and circuit rider, Texas’ outlaw John Wesley Hardin was named after the founder of the Methodist sect—a saint he was not.

The “Handbook of Texas” states that “no more dangerous gunman ever operated in Texas.” The “Terror of Texas”, John Wesley Hardin was rumored to have killed his first man at the age of 14, and depending on whose doing the telling, 30 plus men followed. Legend has it that he was so mean that he once shot a man for snoring.

On May 26, 1874, the outlaw made his mark on Comanche County. While celebrating his 21st birthday at Jack Wright’s Saloon, John Wesley Hardin shot Brown County Sheriff, Charles Webb.

Storytellers who knew the outlaw spin a different tale of a gentleman who “never killed anyone who didn’t need killing.” According to some, he was a man more sinned against than sinning. It has been posed that many of the notches on Hardin’s belt came in self-defense rather than rage.

Immortalized in print and in song, the tales of John Wesley Hardin pose the question, “Was the preacher’s son a cold-blooded killer, or in the harshness of the late 1800’s, were the black and white lines of morality blurred by the basic instinct of survival?”
